What to do if you think you’re peri-menopausal

Most women will start to experience the symptoms of perimenopause, gradually and over several years. Here’s my advice on what to do if you think you may be perimenopausal.

Ah, perimenopause. That delightful time when our bodies decide to throw a hormonal party, and guess what? We’re the star guests! This transitional phase, leading up to the grand event called menopause, can be as unpredictable as the British weather. And just like every woman has her unique dance move, the symptoms and experiences of perimenopause vary widely. Current chatter suggests there are at least 34 different symptoms. Talk about an overachiever!

First Signs of Menopause

For many, the initial hint that the party’s started is a change in their menstrual cycle. But remember, perimenopause is like a box of assorted chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get. Some might experience lighter periods, while others might find them heavier or more frequent.

Thanks to our body’s love affair with oestrogen, the symptoms can be diverse but some of the popular hits include:

  • The unexpected hot flushes (because who doesn’t love a spontaneous sauna?)
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • The infamous brain fog
  • Night sweats
  • Joint aches

So, What’s a Gal to Do?

Educate Yourself: The more you know, the better equipped you’ll be. Track your symptoms, understand their patterns, and if you’re considering Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), this knowledge will be golden. For a deep dive, check out Menopause Matters and their handy symptom score sheet.

Consult Your GP: If you’re over 45, your GP can diagnose perimenopause based on symptoms alone. Younger? A few tests might be in order. Prep for the chat with some background info fromThe Menopause Charity, which also offers a handy factsheet for your first appointment.

Lifestyle Check: It’s time for a little self-love. Revisit your diet, exercise routine, sleep habits, and even that cheeky wine on a Thursday night. A balanced lifestyle can be your best ally during perimenopause. Need guidance? Our very own nutritionist Carrie Smith is here to help.

Find Your Tribe: There are fabulous women out there, rocking their perimenopause phase like the legends that they are. Seek them out on social media, and let their journeys inspire you. Choose Your Support Wisely: A word to the wise – while menopause might be nature’s way, it’s also a booming business. Beware of those promising to balance everything from hormones to chakras. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But if you’re seeking genuine, empathetic guidance, you know where to find us.
